Understanding Quantum Numbers
Quantum numbers describe the trajectory and movement of an electron within an atom. They act like a unique address for every electron. [Image of atomic orbital shapes]
- Principal Quantum Number (n): Determines the main energy level or shell. As ‘n’ increases, the electron is further from the nucleus.
- Azimuthal Quantum Number (l): Determines the shape of the orbital (s, p, d, f).
(s=0, p=1, d=2, f=3). - Magnetic Quantum Number (ml): Determines the orientation of the orbital in space. Values range from -l to +l.
- Spin Quantum Number (ms): Describes the electron’s spin direction, either +1/2 (up) or -1/2 (down).
