Army Body Fat Calculator — One-Site Tape Test
Calculate your compliance with the official 2023 U.S. Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). Use the new single-site screening test or the legacy multi-site confirmation method.
How is this calculated?
Army Body Fat Standards
| Age Group (Years) | Male Max % | Female Max % |
|---|---|---|
| 17–20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21–27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28–39 | 24% | 34% |
| 40+ | 26% | 36% |
These are the maximum allowable percentages. Soldiers exceeding these limits during the One-Site test may request a multi-site confirmation or supplemental DXA/BodPod testing.

How the Army One-Site Tape Test Works
In June 2023, the U.S. Army implemented a significant update to the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). The primary change was the introduction of a simplified one-site tape test. Unlike the old method, which required multiple measurements (neck and waist for men; neck, waist, and hips for women), the new standard relies on a single abdominal circumference measurement combined with body weight.
This calculator utilizes the official regression equations developed by the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, which the Army adopted for this new standard. This method was found to be more accurate than the previous tape test when compared to DXA scans.
Measurement Instructions
- Preparation: Stand upright with arms relaxed at sides. Feet should be together or no more than 12 inches apart.
- Placement: Place the measuring tape around the abdomen at the level of the belly button (umbilicus). The tape should be level with the floor.
- Technique: Take the measurement at the end of a normal exhale. Do not suck in your stomach. The tape should touch the skin without compressing the soft tissue.
- Rounding: Round measurements to the nearest 0.5 inch (or 0.5 cm). Take three measurements and average them for the best accuracy.
What happens if I fail the Tape Test?
The Army emphasizes that the tape test is a screening tool. If a Soldier exceeds the body fat percentage allowed for their age and gender using the one-site method, they have options:
- Confirmation Test: The Soldier can request the legacy multi-site tape test (Old Method). If they pass the multi-site test, they are considered to meet the standard.
- Supplemental Testing: If both tape tests are failed, the Soldier typically has the right to request a supplemental body composition assessment using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), InBody 770, or BodPod (if available).
- ACFT Exemption: Soldiers who score 540 or higher on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), with a minimum of 80 points in each event, are exempt from body fat standards.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the neck measurement still required?
For the new 2023 One-Site test, the neck measurement is not required. It is only used if you opt for the legacy multi-site confirmation test.
Does muscle mass affect the calculation?
The new weight-to-waist formula handles higher body weight better than the old neck-based formula, but bodybuilders with very large waists may still flag. The 540 ACFT exemption is designed to protect high-performing, muscular soldiers.
