ABSI Calculator

Calculate your A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and assess health risks based on waist circumference, height, weight, age, and sex. ABSI is a more accurate predictor of mortality risk than BMI alone.

How ABSI Works

What is ABSI?

The A Body Shape Index (ABSI) is a health metric that combines waist circumference with height and weight to assess mortality risk. Unlike BMI, ABSI accounts for abdominal fat distribution, which is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and premature death.

The Formula

ABSI is calculated using the following formula:

ABSI = WC / (BMI^(2/3) × Height^(1/2))

Where:

  • WC = Waist Circumference (in meters)
  • BMI = Body Mass Index = Weight (kg) / Height² (m²)
  • Height = Height in meters

ABSI Z-Score

The z-score standardizes your ABSI relative to population averages for your age and sex:

z-score = (ABSI - mean_ABSI) / SD_ABSI

A higher z-score indicates greater health risk compared to your demographic group.

Risk Categories

  • Very Low Risk: z-score < -0.868
  • Low Risk: -0.868 ≤ z-score < -0.272
  • Average Risk: -0.272 ≤ z-score < 0.229
  • High Risk: 0.229 ≤ z-score < 0.798
  • Very High Risk: z-score ≥ 0.798
