What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is a milestone in your financial journey where you have accumulated enough investments that, without contributing another penny, your compounding returns will grow to meet your retirement goal by your desired retirement age.

Once you reach this “Coasting” number, you don’t need to save for retirement anymore. You only need to earn enough to cover your current living expenses.

How to use this calculator

  1. Current Age & Retirement Age: Enter your age now and when you plan to stop working.
  2. Current Invested Assets: The total value of your retirement portfolios today.
  3. Annual Retirement Spending: How much money you want to live on per year when you retire (in today’s dollars).
  4. Growth & Withdrawal Rates: 7% growth and 4% withdrawal are standard conservative estimates.

Why is Coast FIRE powerful?

  • Freedom Now: You can switch to a lower-paying, lower-stress job since you don’t need to save aggressively.
  • Security: Knowing your retirement is secured by compound interest offers immense peace of mind.
  • Flexibility: It is usually the first major milestone in the FIRE journey, often reached years before full Financial Independence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this account for inflation?
Yes, if you use an “inflation-adjusted” return rate. Typically, the stock market returns 10%, but inflation is 3%. So, using a 7% return rate accounts for inflation automatically.

What is the 4% rule?
The 4% rule suggests you can safely withdraw 4% of your portfolio in the first year of retirement (adjusted for inflation thereafter) without running out of money for at least 30 years.
