How to Measure for Vinyl Siding
Proper measurement is crucial for an accurate siding estimate. Follow these steps:
1. Measure Walls
For each wall, measure the width and height in feet. Multiply these dimensions to get the square footage. For walls with multiple sections, measure each section separately.
2. Measure Gables
Gables are triangular sections at the top of walls. Measure the base width and the height from the base to the peak. The area is calculated as (base × height) ÷ 2.
3. Account for Openings
Measure all doors and windows. Standard door size is 3×7 feet, and standard window is 3×4 feet. Multiply width by height for each opening and subtract from total wall area.
4. Add Waste Factor
Always add 10-15% waste factor to account for cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching. Our calculator uses 10% by default, which you can adjust.
What is a Siding Square?
In siding terminology, a “square” equals 100 square feet of coverage. This measurement unit simplifies material estimation since siding is typically sold in boxes that cover a certain number of squares.
How Much Waste Should I Add?
The recommended waste factor is 10% for simple installations and 15% for complex projects with many cuts. Waste accounts for:
- Cutting pieces to fit around openings
- Pattern matching for certain siding styles
- Installation mistakes and damaged pieces
- Future repairs that may require matching materials
Common Accessories Explained
Vinyl siding installation requires several accessories:
- J-Channel: Used around windows, doors, and roof lines to create finished edges
- Starter Strip: Installed at the bottom of walls to secure the first row of siding
- Corner Posts: Cover and protect outside corners while allowing for expansion and contraction
- Undersill: Used under windowsills and other horizontal surfaces to secure siding ends
Frequently Asked Questions
No, this calculator estimates material costs only. Labor costs vary by region and complexity of the project. Contact local contractors for labor estimates.
This calculator provides a reliable estimate based on standard measurement practices. For precise quotes, consult with a professional siding contractor who can account for site-specific factors.
While designed for vinyl siding, the measurement principles apply to other siding types. However, waste factors and accessory requirements may differ.
For irregular shapes, break them down into rectangles and triangles, measure each separately, then add the areas together.
Measure each wall section separately based on its specific dimensions. The calculator allows you to add multiple walls with different measurements.
