How It Works: The Wavelength Equation
+
This calculator uses the wavelength equation to solve for wavelength, velocity, or frequency when two of the three variables are known.
The Wavelength Equation
λ = v / f
Where:
- λ = wavelength (in meters)
- v = velocity (in meters per second)
- f = frequency (in hertz)
Example Calculation
Suppose a bell rings with a frequency of 130 Hz, and the speed of sound in air is 343 m/s. The wavelength would be:
λ = 343 m/s / 130 Hz = 2.64 meters
Common Velocity Values
Speed of Light
299,792,458 m/s
Speed of Sound in Air (20°C)
343 m/s
Speed of Sound in Water (20°C)
1,481 m/s
