About Rounding Numbers
Rounding means making a number simpler but keeping its value close to what it was. The result is less precise but easier to use.
Basic Rules of Rounding
- Identify which place value you are rounding to
- Look at the digit to the right of the place value you’re rounding to
- If that digit is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4), round down (leave the digit unchanged)
- If that digit is 5 or greater (5, 6, 7, 8, or 9), round up (increase the digit by 1)
How This Calculator Works
This calculator uses the “Round Half Away From Zero” method. For positive numbers, values halfway between two numbers round up. For negative numbers, values halfway between two numbers round down away from zero.
Examples of Round Half Away From Zero
- 2.4 rounds down to 2
- 2.5 rounds up to 3
- -2.4 rounds up to -2
- -2.5 rounds down to -3
